Sandfields Boys Immortalised in New Swansea Street Mural
Western Street has a brand-new landmark – a striking mural celebrating two of Swansea’s greatest sporting icons.
Cliff Jones and Terry Medwin, affectionately known as "The Sandfields Boys", were both born and raised in the Sandfields area of Swansea.
Jones and Medwin grew up as close friends before rising to footballing fame. They starred for Swansea Town, became teammates at Tottenham Hotspur, and proudly represented Wales on the international stage – including the country’s first-ever World Cup appearance in 1958.

Honouring a Legacy
The mural, painted by local artists Fresh Creative Co., was officially unveiled this past weekend on Western Street – right outside the Chunk Monkey X The BOX Furniture showroom, alongside Crafty Smugglers and The Chopping Block Barbershop.
The ceremony was made even more special with the presence of not just Cliff Jones himself, but also Welsh rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards CBE. Their attendance underlined the importance of this tribute, which honours both friendship and sporting excellence across generations.
Cliff, still full of energy at 90 years old, paid moving tribute to his lifelong friend and teammate Terry Medwin, who sadly passed away in May 2024. In true Cliff fashion, he showed his trademark spirit later in the day at the Swansea.com Stadium – dropping to the ground for a set of push-ups before the Swans’ match against Hull. Swansea played well and led for much of the game, but were pegged back to 2-2 after a late equaliser in added time.

A Work of Art, A Work of Heart
This mural doesn’t just brighten Western Street – it captures a story of local boys who became international icons, a reminder of Swansea’s proud contribution to Welsh sporting history.
We’re proud to have this incredible artwork right on our doorstep, and we invite you to stop by Western Street to see it for yourself. It’s a fitting tribute to The Sandfields Boys – Cliff Jones and Terry Medwin – whose names will forever be etched in Welsh football history.
